The Loyal Algae Eating Fish Freshwater Aquariums: Leopard Cactus Pleco
So they're best kept in a bigger aquarium,
the adult size of the fish is very big.
As juveniles the fins of
the leopard-cactus pleco will have a yellowish colouration but as they mature
the yellow will disappear and the finnage will take about the exact same
camouflage pattern as the primary body.
These fish require lots
of open space in the bottom of the aquarium put set ups are not perfect. It is
far better to make use of sand and add pieces of wood or pvc piping to provide
hiding places and nothing else additional.
A couple colour forms
exist, these are different from L24 and L25 nonetheless. Some fish are more
camel coloured compared to the more dark brown base colour. Additionally the
reddish / orange colouration in the caudal fin varies with age together with
amongst individuals.
Diet
This delightfully called
Cactus Pleco's or Pseudacanthicus. One peek at its mouth illustrates this well:
instead of a true sucker mouth, it has a mouth than is more acceptable for
holding and grabbing food things. Its teeth are few in number, but powerful and
substantial: perfect for rasping meat as well as cracking small crustaceans and
open snails.
Compatibility
Generally peaceful but
territorial. Some large specimens may cause difficulties if housed with other
substantial nocturnal fish and are aggressively territorial.
Care
Not hard to maintain
under the correct conditions; we strongly recommend keeping it in a tank
designed to mimic a flowing river having a substrate of variably -sized rocks,
sand, fine gravel, and some water worn boulders.
This can be farther
furnished with driftwood branches, terracotta pipes, plant pots, etc., ordered
to form a system of nooks, crannies, and shaded spots, thereby supplying broken
lines of sight.
Suggested Tankmates
The temptation with
large tough Loricariids would be to keep them with large, tough other fish
including alternative brutish characters or Oscars. This actually works quite
well with plecos that are chiefly vegetarian or omnivorous.
Pseudacanthicus but,
like all large plecos, generate vast amounts of waste yet are big messy
carnivores and as such would need monumental filtration to house alongside non
- catfish" equals". It's better to think of these catfish as the
centrepiece fish and stock their aquarium with moderate sized (rather
omnivorous) fish. All sizes of barbs work astonishingly well.
Disposition
Just enjoy many other
pleco species comparatively peaceful if it has enough room to stake out a land,
that may nevertheless be protected fiercely if intruded by other fish. Towards
it is similar or own sort appearing pleco's, this species can be very aggressive,
and when cramped for space also against other bottom dwellers.
Breeding
As yet there aren't any
reports of Pseudacanthicus leopardus reproduction in the aquarium. They have
been known to be cave spawners in the wild which involves them digging out
caverns in the river banks to make nests for his or her young. The male of the
species will display parental care that is complete with all the female being
chased away once the eggs fertilised and have already been laid.
